Bare Fiber

Bare Fiber

Bare fiber is a fiber optic cable that has not been coated. It’s used in telecommunications for high speed transmission, dispersion, and large core multimode fiber.
How it’s used

  • Bare fiber PLC splitters: Used in FTTH passive optical networks, these splitters are spliced with optical fibers in distribution and drop cables.
  • Bare fiber adapters: These mechanical devices are used to align fiber-optic connectors.
  • Bare fiber pigtails: These pigtails are equipped with an SMA-steckverbinder on one side and are cleaved or equipped with fiber tips on the other side.

How it’s tested
Bare fiber is tested with a launch cable that has a connector on one end and bare fiber on the other end.
A temporary mechanical or fusion splice is used to connect the bare fiber to the launch cable.
